Monique Lhuillier: A Gem in Fashion Designing

Monique Lhuillier is one of the reasons why I have a passion for designing. Since young, I’ve been designing gowns as much as I paint or draw. Randy Ortiz and Rajo Laurel are just few of the country’s fashion jewels that I’ve been dreaming to be, and not to forget Vera Wang in my list.

Lhuillier plays an important role in my life as a designer. Not that I'm copying her technique because I want to create my own image as a designer, but she's one of the few Filipinos that are now soaring tremendously in the limelight of global fashion designing.

Diane Monique Llamas Lhuillier was born in 1971 in Cebu City, Cebu, Philippines. She is a Filipina fashion designer based in the United States. She is of mixed French and Spanish-Cebuano descent.

Monique Lhuillier is one of the reasons why I have a passion for designing.

She's the daughter of Michel Lhuiller, a successful businessman of mixed French Filipino descent, and Amparito Llamas, a society figure & former model of Spanish-Cebuano Filipino descent. Lhuillier's family is prominent in Philippine society. She was born to Michel J. Lhuillier, a successful Filipino businessman of Mixed french descent and Amparito Llamas Lhuillier, a Filipina society figure and former model of Spanish-Cebuana descent. They own a chain of pawnshops currently operating in more than a hundred cities in the nation.

Lhuillier demonstrated good taste and great imagination at an early age. At 15, she was an outstanding student in Lausanne, Switzerland and hoped to become successful in the fashion industry. Her parents sent her to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM), where she met the man she married, Tom Bugbee.

Lhuillier and Bugbee, a young, dynamic husband and wife team, founded their company in 1996 and launched their first bridal collection. The line was extremely well-received by fashion-savvy brides, editors, and celebrities.

The breakthrough came after Monique designed the gowns for her wedding entourage. These captured the fancy of couture circles. Having had a difficult time finding her own gown, Lhuillier, a 23-year-old newlywed at the time, decided to begin sketching her own line of dresses. Her husband figured this was little more than a hobby, one that she would tire of soon enough. "He thought I had the wedding blues and eventually I'd get over it," she told USA WEEKEND Magazine.

She made the news with two high-profile celebrity weddings in a row. She designed Christine Baumgartner's wedding dress for her Fall, 2004 wedding to Kevin Costner shortly after designing both of Britney Spears's dresses for her wedding to Kevin Federline. She's also designed the wedding gown of US former Vice President and former Second Lady Al and Tipper Gore's youngest daughter, Sarah G. Lee, for her marriage to Bill Lee, Giuliana DePandi's wedding gown to The Apprentice winner Bill Rancic, and Allison Munn's wedding gown to actor Scott Holroyd, and also Heidi Montag's wedding dress to Spencer Pratt. Also, one of her gowns is used by Hilary Duff when she plays Sam in A Cinderella Story.

Subsequently Lhuillier added evening wear to her line, and several of her efforts showed up on red carpets before awards shows. For the Fall, 2007 season she branched off into more typical runway collections.

Monique Lhuillier has been passionate of what she's doing. She may never have expected that her time in fashion designing will come, but look at her now...A REAL GEM IN FASHION DESIGNING.

Shakira Changed Name And Wore Disguise For UCLA Class

How did Shakira manage to take a summer history class at UCLA in 2007 and not make headlines until after the course was over?

The Colombian-bred international pop star revealed her successful game plan in a recent interview with the UK's The Guardian.

"I used to wear a cap and a big backpack," Shakira explained. "I looked like a boy. I didn't get recognized."

When onlookers got suspicious and inquired whether or not she was the "Hips Don't Lie" singer, she told them that her name was Isabel, which is actually one of her middle names.

Her simple plan worked. Professor Robert Cleve, who taught the Introduction to Western Civilization: Ancient Civilizations from Prehistory to Circa A.D. 843 class, had no idea "Isabel" was actually a pop star.

"She told me she was visiting from Colombia and that she was just doing this for her own enlightenment and enjoyment," Cleve told the Associated Press in 2007. "She looked like just an ordinary student. She wasn't flamboyant...she didn't act like a big celebrity or anything."

Shakira decided to take the class after wrapping the tour for her album, "Oral Fixation."

When most celebs need a break from the business, they typically take a real vacation. They travel to a remote destination, relax, and clear their minds.



But Shakira said challenging her mind instead was the ideal getaway after the tour.
"It was such a long tour, I needed a break from me," Shakira told The Guardian. "The universe is so broad, I cannot be at the center of it. So I decided to go to the university and study history for a summer course, just to kind of switch gears, taste the student life."

Shakira has been known to spend her spare time studying, and learning about the countries she visits, her manager Fifi Kurzman told The Associated Press.
While Shakira did not attend the last few classes, she told The Guardian that she enjoyed the experience. "I would go to the university over and over again if I could," Shakira said.

A BUSY WEEKEND: FROM DIVISORIA TO GREENHILLS

My supposition of a weekend repleted with sketching designs of gowns or reading books is far different from what happened last weekend. Me and my friends went to Divisoria to buy some toys for my older sister's grocery store (Oh! forget about that). I feel like collapsing in the midst of fussy people while paving our way to where we should go.

But since Divisoria boasts of plethora of variety of commodities, it is one of the best places that I really want to keep coming back to no matter what the consequences may be.

Important tip when you go there: DON'T DRESSED UP. I know that you know why. hehe =)



My friends and I took a picture to the busy crowd while we were squirming our way to 168 Mall.




Divisoria is a cornucopia of affordable goods that are trendy and chic. If you are looking for bags, tank tops, bolero, blouses, accessories, footwears among others, you could consider it a haven of admired styles of products.



Well, economic recession is the bottom line why we have to spare the biggest chunk of our monthly salary. Hence, wise buyers don't spend much on buying clothes but rather for more important needs for survival, i.e. food. But tightening the belt doesn't necessarily mean that you have to be out of fashion or let that old dress be worn everyday. You could still be fashionable by wearing 'cheaper' clothes from Divisoria than from branded clothes from malls. Anyway, it's not necessary to show that you have a Prada or Gucci or Louis Vuitton. What you need to have is the skill of mixing and matching clothes from your closet, old clothes or cheap clothes that is.



If you go to Greenhilss without a car, then be patient to wait for a cab


But if you don't like going to Divisoria, try the more 'sosyal tiangge' - Greenhills.

How shall I spend my weekend?!!! hmmmm whatta question. hehe

It would be same old same old I supposed.

It would just be full of sketching gowns for a planned fashion show (let's cross our fingers to that. hehe), or writing something for this site, going to the Mall with friends... I dunno.

STUCK IN A TRAFFIC JAM

I was so pissed off with the traffic as we (my friends) were about to go to our offices . Because there is no cab available, we need to walk from Kapitolyo, Pasig to Escriva. Whew! As the pearl of sweats cascading down my forehead, cheeks and all over my body, my eyebrows furrowed. We just got a cab near our office. Whatta day!!!
